Time to move on this cool vintage Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster 1000 aka "Baby Panerai" in beautiful condition.
This great vintage diver dates from the late 1960s and is widely considered a
design classic. This Depthmaster 1000 is a rugged water resistant watch with
heavy screw-back steel cushion case in the style of the Rolex Oyster cases
provided to Panerai during WWII with the addition of an elapsed time bezel.
The highly legible and semi-Arabics dial and screwed spring bars further
reinforce that connection and this iconic Nivada Grenchen also features a
high quality shock resistant ETA movement with 21 jewels. CASE & BACK: Wonderfully proportioned "Baby Panerai" case is 38mm wide
(not including crown) x 48mm long. Chunky domed crystal, with thick, straight
lugs and a very Oyster-like cushion design the case appears unpolished with its
original satin finish and sharp chamfers and is in excellent+ original vintage
condition with only minor scuffs and some small nicks. Screw in polygon
water-resistant caseback has some superficial scratches/tool marks. All the
text and logo is very sharp. The original thick, Panerai-like screwed springbars
are present and in excellent condition.BEZEL: Original thick bi-directional friction-style knurled steel bezel with luminous
triangle at "12" and enamel-filled hash marks. It rotates perfectly in both directions
as designed and all enamel fill is present, as is the Tritium in the triangle, which
matches the dial nicely.DIAL & HANDS: Original black dial with sharp white text and bold red 1000, all
markers are in good order. The 10 is the only area with some patina. Tritium filled
hands show minimal cracking. The circle on the hour hand has some missing lume.
Beautiful red sweep seconds hand with lume intactCROWN: winds and pulls out to the non-hack time setting positions as it should.
The only thing of note is that it is a little stiff when manually winding.
But it does wind. Setting the hands and date is niceCRYSTAL: Thick high domed acrylic crystalMOVEMENT: Nivada modified ETA cal. 2472.It is non-hacking. Automatic and manual wind
Straps: I am including all the straps in the listing. The minimal stitched vintage leather,
the khaki striped parachute "Erica" styled. This is a proper 18mm to match the watch.
Lastly is the genuine Swiss Made tropic strap that came with the watch. This watch takes
18mm straps and these are secured by thick screwed spring bars, as mentioned above.Overall, a very cool retro diver dial that really pops on the wrist.
History & Trivia
Nivada (or Nivada Grenchen, or Croton in the states) should be a familiar name to
vintage watch collectors. Their sporty diver's chronograph, the Chronomaster (or even
sometimes Chronoking) Aviator Sea Diver, has been gaining well-deserved traction on
the vintage chronograph circuit. But in the 1960s the brand was also a trailblazer
in the realm of dive watches, producing handsome examples with a groundbreaking
1000m depth rating.
This particular watch, a Depthmaster 1000, was launched in 1965 on the heels of
the Depthomatic, the first watch ever to feature a depth gauge. The Depthmaster
was introduced to the world in an ad campaign that triumphantly declared it to
be "probably the most waterproof watch." Whatever the veracity of that statement,
the 1000m depth rating wouldn't be surpassed until Rolex released the
Sea-Dweller in 1967. NOTE: An atypical but certainly amusing print advertisement for this model contains the copy: Wear this watch to dive deeply, scuba safely, sing sweetly (Gurgle Gurgle), chart channels, forage for fish, plunge for pearls, kiss girls and never worry. Its the worlds most waterproof! And all this for $....Price: 1458 net to me.
